Abstract:
      The analytical methods for determining different forms of carbon (total carbon ,free carbon and silicon carbide ) in aluminium matrix composites were investigated in this paper. Infrared absorption method after combustion in an induction furnace, acid dissolving separation-infrared absorption method, and gravimetric method were used to determine the total carbon of 2.00%~6.00% (4.2% RSD), the free carbon of 0.10%~1.50% (1.2%RSD) and the silicon carbide of 1%~35% (0.51% RSD), respectively(n=8). The recoveries for free carbon and silicon carbide were 98.5%~100.2% and 99%~101%, respectively. These methods are rapid and accurate, and have been applied for analysis of carbon in aluminum matrix composites .
