Abstract:
A Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) method for determination of rare earth impurities in high purity erbium oxide was developed in this study. Matrix effect, selection of isotope and internal standard, and instrumental parameters were investigated in order to find the optimal experimental conditions. Particularly, the influence of instrument resolution and plasma power on interference to the detection of polyatomic ion of erbium hydroxide was studied. Through increasing plasmas power, changing instrument resolution and making correction via mathematical equation, the interference of 164Er1H and 168Er1H to the determination of 165Ho and 169Tm was reduced or completely eliminated. Cs was chosen as the internal standard element and used to measure the various contents of the rare earth impurities in high purity erbium oxide. The obtained results were in good agreement with those by standard addition method.
